I am making myself available to work with guest artists in my studio in PA on a personal basis (anywhere from one to two individuals at a time.  This is more concentrated and personal than a normal workshop where I have 12-14 students at a time. I am reserving the right to be very selective in choosing guest artists; acceptance is done on an individual basis.

LEVEL #1. This would be an observational relationship - I would carry on with my work, and you as the guest artist would observe, ask questions, and have the benefit of learning from me in a very intimate environment. I would adjust my schedule so that while you are in the studio, I will be concentrating on your area of interest – EX: alla prima painting, still life, portrait, etc. This would be the least expensive option.

LEVEL #2. This relationship would be one of working full-time with you as the guest artist, side by side all day long, working on your painting and art. Concentrated and intense.

Areas of instruction would include some of the following:

A variety of Oil Painting techniques including alla prima, glazing, mixed media

Working from Photographs – avoiding the pitfalls, and going beyond your reference

Improving the Design and Composition in your work

How to photograph your work and digital media

How to look at your work from a fresh new perspective, and how to keep it fresh

Learning how “to see” your subject, and how to make better decisions with regard to edges, value, and color

For Level #2, an easel, work table/area, turpentine and paper towels will be provided.  You are welcome to bring your own as well.

FEES:

Level #1 Daily Fee: $250
Level #2 Daily Fee: $500

If two or three artists wish to come together, arrangements can be easily made for housing.  In the case of multiple artists, there will be a discount given on the daily rate – call for details. Spouses are welcome for no charge.

All options would include a personal portfolio critique of your work. Bring a CD, slides or printed samples. Having small original pieces of art would also be advantageous.

Working hours would be from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm with a lunch break. Lunch will be provided (cooking courtesy of my wife Valerie – she has kept me fat and happy for 33 years!). You are on your own for breakfast and dinner – inexpensive restaurants are a short drive away. You should anticipate having your own car to get around.
I can offer very inexpensive housing right up the road in a private apartment for $50 a night – it has a full kitchen, bath and is very clean and comfortable. More details given upon request.

I have DSL wireless, so bring your laptop.

LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS:

I am located approximately 8 miles east of the Ohio border in the northwest corner of PA, 20 minutes west of Interstate 79 and 25 minutes south of Interstate 90. Approximate driving times would be1 hour and 45 minutes east of Cleveland, OH; 2 hours north of Pittsburgh, PA; 2 hours southwest of Buffalo, NY;

The closest airport is Erie, PA - only 35 minutes away. Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Buffalo airports are roughly equidistant from the studio. The closest small town is Conneautville, and Meadville is about 25 minutes away.

My home and studio are in the middle of 17 acres, surrounded by dairy farms, thick woods and open meadows. There are numerous Amish homes in the area, and they are often seen on the roads in their buggies and shopping in the area. My property and the surrounding farms are home to numerous wild turkeys, deer, rabbits, groundhogs, hawks, fox, Canadian geese and all sorts of critters. There are plenty of places to plein air paint. Lake Pymatuning is 15 minutes away.

If this type of personal artist to artist interaction is of interest to you, CLICK HERE, and send me an email briefly stating the reasons for your interest and a short biography. If you have a website, include your URL. I will contact you by phone and/or email (make sure you include your phone #), and we will further discuss your interest.

It is worth noting again that this studio instruction is for relatively advanced oil painters who are either serious amateurs or professionals.

Thanks for your interest and best regards......Michael
